The Seamlessness of Reality

Beingness

Every form is temporary. It appears from vast empty space and disappears back into that space. That is its natural tendency — to appear and disappear. Forms are not independent of the formlessness from which they arise. They are not separate from their source.

Planets seamlessly appear from and disappear back into space. Clouds seamlessly appear from and disappear back into the sky. Sounds seamlessly appear from and disappear back into silence. These forms do not need to be manipulated. They arise and fall in the natural cycle of birth and death.

The same is true for thoughts. Thoughts seamlessly appear from and disappear back into awareness. Thoughts, opinions, ideas, stories, and beliefs do not need to be manipulated. They arise and fall naturally and effortlessly.

Suffering happens only when there is movement to manipulate, escape, overcome, or neutralize thoughts. When thoughts are simply noticed and allowed to be exactly as they are by awareness, they have no power to harm you. They are quite beautiful in that sense.

Let thoughts arise. Do you really have control anyway? Isn’t the notion of control just another thought? Let that thought arise and fall too. Simply notice that your true nature is the awareness in which these thoughts arise and fall and that these thoughts are expressions of (are not separate from) awareness.

Part 1 Beyond Metaphysics (Do thoughts mirror reality?)

Beingness

Part 1 of a six part series. This asks the question, “Can my thoughts about reality ever be absolutely true” and “Can they ever mirror a pregiven reality?” What is non-conceptual awareness revealing about what we call “reality?”

Scott Kiloby

Part 2 Beyond Metaphysics (what is metaphysics and the myth of the given?)

Part 2 of a six part series. Brief pointing to non-dual realization and the freedom inherent in it. Then this question: “If there can never be proof of something existing independent of our concepts about it, what does this say about our pointers to non-duality?” We find conflict “after” nondual realization when we continue believing that thought can deliver or mirror reality or truth. What is “metaphysics” and “the myth of the given?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part 3 Beyond Metaphysics
Part 3 of a six part series. The experiment with eight booths and the question, “What is reality?” What is this telling us about science, religion, culture, and even the way we talk about nonduality and other forms of spirituality?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Part 4 Beyond Metaphysics (metaphysics often sneaks into nondual talk)

Part 4 of a six part series. We don’t live in a nonconceptual void. Therefore, the myth of the given, the myth that “my thoughts are absolutely true,” is vital to the way we speak to each other about reality. When concepts appear, there is always the possibility of engaging in metaphysics, which is basically dreaming and calling it truth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part 5 Beyond Metaphysics (Taking belief out of nonduality)
Part 5 of a six part series. Taking the religion out of nonduality. In taking into account postmodern findings, has nondual realization been destroyed? Is it still available. YES! But it isn’t a pregiven reality. It is a seeing available (normally) only through taking injunctions and looking into your present experience to see whether separation is real.
Part 6 Beyond Metaphysics
A message from Scott Kiloby…
Hello Friends:
This series came after years of receiving many, many emails of people confused about how one message of nonduality can seem so different than another message, or how one teacher’s interpretation can seem so different than another’s. I shared the same confusion. I’m trying best to explain in this series how this confusion was resolved for me.
For anyone interested in sitting through that, I would like some feedback if you would be so kind. Here are the questions I would like you to answer if you are interested.
1. Is this series clear?
2. Did I explain what I mean by “myth of the given” and “metaphysics” clearly?
3. What do you think the central point of the series is? Can you explain it in 30 words or less in an email to me.
4. Did you benefit from this series? If so, please explain.
5. Did it clear up any issues for you regarding how the message of nonduality is often delivered in sometimes conflicting ways or how other forms of spirituality seem to conflict with one another? Please explain.
I will read each response, but I may or may not respond back to you. The reason I am asking for this feedback is that I want to be clear on these topics, but they are somewhat confusing for some people. Please let me know, if you are interested, what you thought about this series by answering these questions. Of course, if anyone doesn’t want to respond or answer these questions, that is perfectly ok.
Much love, Scott
Hello Everyone
Awareness
It’s great to be here–I consider it an honor and privilege to be asked to participate! A few quick introductory comments that may be useful:
I capitalize words such as Awareness, Consciousness, Self, Being, etc.–all of which are treated as synonyms. This is done only to emphasize that what is being referred to, or pointed to, is entirely impersonal. As is probably crystal clear by now–always, It is Awareness Itself that is being aware, never a “me.” Capitalization also is a way of making a distinction (for any who may be new here) between boundless Awareness or Consciousness as It is meant in
nonduality, and the typical “on the street” meaning, which usually refers to so-called human inside-the-body-consciousness.
If you’re not familiar with my book or work, you can go to
http://www.consciousnessisall.com where you can read 5 free chapters from the book, along with the blog, Reality Check. There are also free videos (including clips from a new DVD with Chris Hebard), and a free 90 min. audio with Scott Kiloby, who hosted here recently.
As you know, much has been said here already by Stanley, Scott, Greg and Rupert,in clarifying the nature of objects, sensation, thought, and other forms of phenomena. It would be very hard to improve upon that.
So–it might be fun and exciting to now get more into what Awareness is to pure Awareness. After all, this is Its Awareness, isn’t It? Most emphatically, this does not mean to get more and better concepts about Awareness, or to create a “me” who’s going to think differently about Awareness. It’s just using the words here to “get beyond words” in some new ways, even though You already are beyond the words.
It’s like Jeff Foster says: “…The wonder of this, the aliveness of what’s happening, cannot be spoken of…and yet still, as I always say, why not try. The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Name, but that doesn’t stop you from writing the Tao Te Ching. When the why goes, all you’re left with is the why not, and that’s the freedom in this expression.”
One more important point–and the basis from which I will be responding to most questions. It is taking the stance that Awareness is utterly history-less. As you’ve seen from the examples of “direct experience” given here and elsewhere,any notion that there has been a past, a prior time–isn’t really past at all,but would be merely a thought trying to arise in what seems to be the current moment. (And if that’s not already clear, we’ll certainly discuss it, too!)
Sometimes we will be clear on this, but will unwittingly continue to assume that, “Well, yes, thoughts are arising just now–but Awareness Itself–well,It’s been here forever.” Not true. Even the notion that Awareness Itself has been present and aware before–this, too, would be just a thought trying to arise now. This means that, as Present Awareness, You have no history whatsoever! There is no history, period! How new, how pure, how unlimited is This?!
Direct experience seems to be a very useful tool. Do you realize even the notion that you’ve had prior experience in using direct experience–even that, too, would be a mere thought arising now! As pure Awareness, you’ve done no such thing because Awareness really has no need for it. That doesn’t mean one won’t continue to use it, but the “ultimate” use of direct experience is to see there has been no prior use of direct experience!
So what is this Present Awareness that has zero history? This is You! You are so Free, so naked of concepts (even the concept of nakedness), it is indescribable!
Let’s do our best to speak from, or as, This because, after all, This is the One that is presently conscious. Words may get difficult, and they may fall well short, but again, why not try?
Simply Open
Beingness
I meet several viewpoints in talking about awareness.  I meet those who believe in separation, in the notion that things exist as separate objects, totally independent of other objects and independent of awareness itself.  I also meet those who believe in non-separation.  They have had a non-dual realization, which frees them from the suffering inherent in separation.  However, because the mind wants to make sense of insight, it often turns this non-dual seeing into belief.  So these people often BELIEVE in non-separation.
The real freedom is not in absolutizing or believing either view.  When these insights are not being emphasized as beliefs, life has a simple sweetness, love, peace, and compassion.  It’s very simple, like just allowing this moment to be exactly as it is, without resistance.  In this simplicity, you don’t insist that nothing exists.  And you don’t insist that everything exists separately.  You don’t even insist that it’s all One.  Instead there you are, totally open.  You are the mystery, enjoying itself as whatever appears in that moment.  And then the appearance, no matter how profound or mundane or good or bad, falls away, leaving no trace.  And you know that the appearance is not something separate from what you are, but you aren’t trying to convince yourself or others of that point.  So you remain completely open to whatever appears next, whether it has the fragrance of duality or non-duality.  That’s a kind of choiceless love that belief (or rigid adherence to mental viewpoints) cannot know.
Today’s Gem — Anger
Awareness
There is an entire self-help industry and a multitude of spiritual programs and techniques designed to help you “get rid” of your anger. They are all based on the faulty premise that you can escape what is. You cannot escape what is. That is impossible. If anger is arising, that is what is arising. Any movement to escape it or get rid of it is a denial of what is arising. It is resistance. When you resist what is happening, you merely strengthen it.
Instead of seeking to get rid of anger, simply notice it. Notice that it arises in a space of non-dual awareness. That space is who you are. The anger is merely a temporary energy movement arising and falling in that space.
Notice the mental stories that feed the anger and the strategies the mind uses to escape it. Let those stories and strategies come and go naturally and effortlessly in the space. This non-dual awareness has no agenda to escape or resist the anger. Spacious awareness is simply present to the anger, exactly as it is.
When there is no longer resistance to anger, it is no longer being fed. It disappears back into awareness. Stated another way, nothing appears as everything. So, in this case, nothing (awareness) appears as something (anger) and will effortlessly die back into awareness (nothing) if it is not resisted.
